Pope Francis will be celebrating five years as head of the Catholic Church this March. To mark this anniversary, two leading Catholics – a journalist and a theologian - will debate over the legacy of Pope Francis’s controversial pontificate.

Ross Douthat is a New York Times Columnist and author of “To Change the Church: Pope Francis and the Future of Catholicism”.
Dr. Massimo Faggioli is a professor of Theology at Villanova University and a regular contributor to Commonweal Magazine. Both have unique viewpoints on the Pope’s leadership. This debate will highlight core issues surrounding the current papacy.

The event is co-hosted by Religion New Foundation and Religion News Service & The Center on Religion and Culture at Fordham University. The debate is moderated by David Gibson, Director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture.

"As Faggioli argued last night, five years is long enough to say that a Pontificate is no longer transitional: We are now safely in the Pope Francis era, on a time horizon where whatever changes this Pope brings could be lasting or even defining."
